How will you celebrate World Environment Day?

In light of recent global events, it is absolutely necessary to celebrate World Environment Day this year.

“Oceans. Land. Forests. Water. The air that we breathe. This is our environment. It is the keystone of a sustainable future. Without a healthy environment, we cannot end poverty or build prosperity. We all have a role to play in protecting our only home. We can use less plastics, drive less, waste less food and teach each other to care. On World Environment Day – and every day – let us reconnect with nature. Let us cherish the planet that protects us.”
                                                            António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General

Each year, the fifth of June rolls around and not many people acknowledge a global holiday worth discussing. World Environment Day is a day to celebrate nature and to recognize that we only have one planet and must take care of it. Effects of climate change can easily be seen today and we need to change our bad habits in order to repair the damage our recklessness and ignorance have caused.

An easy first step is to celebrate World Environment Day. I celebrated by surrounding myself with nature, art, and food from the environments around me. Friday morning, some friends of mine and I went to the Dallas World Aquarium and had an amazing experience exploring the world through its different ecosystems.

Seeing so many species of birds, monkeys, and fish was a nice reminder of the beauty this planet holds. And surprisingly enough, the plant life was just as intriguing. The canopy of flowers and leaves made the air so much more refreshing to breathe than the thick outside alternative.

So much more needs to be done to ensure the preservation of our planet. Here is a National Geographic article about how climate change and pollution from fossil fuels has caused coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef.

We spent our afternoon at the Dallas Museum of Art admiring the environments portrayed from around the world. In the spirit of the holiday, I paid special attention to the landscapes and scenes of each painting realizing how influential an environment can be on an artist and a society in general.

Saturday, I decided to wake up early and headed to my local farmer’s market. While there, I was able to taste fresh produce from my own environment. The local farmers had everything from squash to peaches to even some vegetables that, sadly, I could not name. I bought Swiss chard, carrots, and potatoes that I later made into a delicious lunch that tasted so fresh and different from the supermarket produce I usually buy.

In all, I am proud of how I celebrated World Environment Day. I want to spend my life honoring the world around me. Whether it’s by cooking food from the earth or traveling its continents, I strive to see more of our planet’s beauty every day.

So, tell me in the comments below, how will you celebrate World Environment Day? Will you go to a park? Recycle your water bottle? Or finally start that backyard garden you’ve always planned? No gesture is too small, as long as you show Mother Earth you still care.

Why

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”  ~Jane Goodall, Primatologist, Author, Activist I am participating in the Project Green Challenge 2017, a 30-day long challenge devoted to creating a more sustainable lifestyle, one action at a time. Today is Day 1 and I was prompted to think about why I want to live more consciously. And if you are reading this, I want you to do the same. This video made me think. It made me think that all that we have done to this planet can be healed. That, though we have hurt our home and hurt our fellow man, there is still hope that we can reach a day where we no longer fight over resources that should not be fought over in the first place. It taught me that instead of fighting, collaboration and humility can solve our problems and inspire future generations to take better care of the pla...

Zero Waste Toothpaste Recipe

So I ran out of toothpaste and I thought, “When would be a better time to try out a Zero Waste alternative toothpaste?” If you’re hygienic like me, you probably brush your teeth at least twice a day…with a plastic toothbrush…and with toothpaste out of a plastic tube. Even though this waste seems minuscule, it adds up. So why not at least try an alternative that leaves less of an impact on our planet? There are plenty of alternative routes you can take to a clean mouth. Some people simply use baking soda and water while others, like myself, stick to the familiar paste format.  I did some research into different recipes and found one that seems to work for me. This recipe follows an easy 2 – to – 1 ratio of coconut oil to baking soda with any essential oil you prefer. I found a cheap coconut oil in a recyclable jar and I bought baking soda in bulk with a reusable cloth bag at my local grocery store. In an airtight candle jar, I mixed 6 tablespoons of coconut ...
